Hebrew (עברית)
Hebrew is one of the oldest existing languages on the planet, and of course, the “native tongue” of the Bible. According to traditional belief Hebrew (עִבְרִית, Ivrit) is a “Holy Tongue”, since it is believed to be the language from which God created the universe. The term “Holy Tongue” – “Leshon Hakodesh” comes from the verb “`avar” (עבר) meaning “to cross over”. From here also comes the name Abraham “ha-ivri” (which is the founding father of all three monotheistic belief systems) and can be understood as “the One who crossed The Great River Prath and came to the land of Cna’an.”
Modern Hebrew is the official language of the State of Israel and is currently spoken by about 7 million people worldwide.
